Last weekend, we went out to Utila, which is our favorite of the Bay Islands. It’s pretty, cheap, and has great snorkeling.
We visited the Iguana Breeding Station, which conducts a breeding and education program to increase the population of a type of iguana that lives only on Utila and is endangered because the locals eat them.
On Saturday, we took a boat out to one of the cays off Utila and snorkeled for most of the day. The water was deeper there than off Utila, so the coral and fish were bigger. We even saw a sea turtle. The next day, we saw a spotted ray that was probably six feet long just off Utila. Pretty amazing!
We toured the Jade Seahorse, which has restaurant and store, as well as a big garden area and a few cabins. Every square inch is covered with mosaic or strange art of some type. It was actually kind of scarry and very bizarre….reminded you of something out of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
We came home Sunday afternoon exhausted, but only a little sunburned, so the weekend was a success. And it was a great way to spend Mother’s Day!!
