A New Ultrasound

The following note came from Dr. Leon Greene, the cardiologist here at Loma de Luz. For years, the hospital has been needing a good ultrasound machine, and by God's provision, we now have the BEST!

Hey, all those of you interested in ultrasound (now I've eliminated about 75% of the readers)-

Blessings! We just acquired a (NEW) GE Vivid-e BT-10, 2010 model, ultrasound machine. GE released this model only last Friday - it's the latest and greatest. It comes with adult and a pediatric cardiac transducers. I'm not sure if I will have it in my hands by Friday when I begin the trip back to Honduras, but we'll at least have it within the next few weeks. Friends and contacts at GE and a Christian group called MedPro Imaging pulled their collective strings to make this happen. It wasn't free (they got it for us at about half-price), but we were able to purchase it with money we had in a ministry medical equipment fund. So PTL! It will be useful for abdominal/OB and could be used for vascular, too, if we later are able to get the vascular probe.

Thanks to everyone for praying for this machine over the last 3 years, and to those of you who also tried to get a machine from other sources. We'll have the best ultrasound available to mankind in a few days/weeks! Now all we need is someone who actually knows how to use it properly.

Dress Up

Grandma Linda made dress up dresses for the girls for Christmas. Using her super grandma sewing powers, she crafted them out of saris (not sure on that spelling) she got in India a few years ago. The girls think they are awesome! Below are Guildy and our 3-year-old friend Linci all dressed up.

Baking

A few weeks ago, Guildy saw this pencil cake in a magazine and wanted to make it. So we mixed up a gluten-free brownie-like product as best we could with only rice four and corn starch and without the cohesive power of xanthan gum. While it tasted really good, it didn't stand up well to the frosting application and got pretty crumbly. But it was fun!

Lots 'O Swimming

What better to do on a nice January day than go swimming, right?

Two weekends ago, we enjoyed a day at the Lis Lis River with the Lent's, who are a new family serving at the hospital. Josh and Jon discovered a couple hot springs running into the river. It kind of reminded us of the Boiling River in Yellostone...except for there aren't any ice chunks floating by in the Lis Lis River! Below are Guildy, Amy, and Anna.

This past weekend, we went to the waterfall in the Bambu River with a Honduran family from Rio Esteban. Because it is the rainy season, there was lots of water coming down! The guy in the photo is Donald, and he's about 6'4", just for perspective.Below the waterfall is a nice deep swimming hole.The recent rains had washed up lots of good sand, so the kids had a great time. I asked about the origin of his name, and his dad Donald, who is Garifuna (African Honduran), said it is the masculine version of his grandmother's Garifuna name, DaKeldi.
